New Zealand Rugby Captain Sam Cane Faces Suspension After World Cup Final Red Card
1 min readNew Zealand’s rugby captain, Sam Cane, is facing a three-game suspension due to his red card during the World Cup final.
The incident that led to his red card was a high tackle on Jesse Kriel during the 12-11 defeat by South Africa last month. Cane is currently on a sabbatical from the Waikato Chiefs as he spends a season playing in Japan. The 31-year-old is expected to make his debut for Suntory against Urayasu D-Rocks on December 2.
In an effort to reduce the ban by one game, Cane has expressed his intention to complete a tackling course. As a result, he will be unavailable for two matches with his new team, Suntory Sungoliath, in Japan.
Notably, Cane made history as the first player to be sent off in a men’s World Cup final and acknowledged the impact of the incident by stating, “Unfortunately it is something I am going to have to live with forever.”
